Buy the Calyx Smock sewing pattern from Pattern Fantastique. The Calyx Smock is named after the part of the flower where petals and fruit form. Balanced between the decorative and utilitarian, the pattern stems from the designer's memory of her mother's hairdressing apron, which she wore in the late 70s, combined with the handmade gathered smock she dressed the designer in at the same time.
The neckline is high with gathers radiating from the binding. Cropped above the knee, a shirttail hem gives the illusion the dress is shorter than it really is. The top version has a subtler hem shape for an even finish around the high hip. Both versions have options for a rolled or faced hem and cap or elbow length sleeves. There is a tie closure at the centre back.
